Cary Alumni History

On Saturday, October 28, 1989, 13 men rededicated themselves to the task of “Honorable Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor,” when the Cary (NC) Alumni Chapter was chartered in the city of Cary; a suburb of Raleigh. This synopsis details the events that inspired the interest, vision, and eventual establishment of the Cary Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. It is dedicated to our late brother and visionary leader, Brother Charles Anderson. This dream may never have come to fruition without his encouragement, leadership, and patience. Brother Anderson was affectionately known as "Pole,"; therefore, he will forever remain in our hearts.
During the fraternal year 1987- 1988, Brother Charles Anderson served as the Polemarch of the Raleigh (NC) Alumni Chapter. Brother Anderson, a fifty-year member, had recently moved to the area to lead the Department of Meteorology at North Carolina State University. During this era, many young and talented Kappa men also relocated to the Research Triangle area, and many chose to affiliate with the Raleigh (NC) Alumni Chapter.
As the year progressed, these young brothers developed a close relationship with Brother Anderson. Many of these brothers worked in the Information Technology industry or were self-employed entrepreneurs. This led to many discussions about the impact of technology on daily life and the importance of entrepreneurial spirit for achieving true freedom and control over one's livelihood. These discussions often highlighted the discrepancies in services between major urban areas like Raleigh and Durham and the rural areas of Western Wake County, including Apex, Holly Springs, and rural Cary.
It was evident that most participants in the chapter's programs were from Raleigh or South East Wake County, leaving Western Wake County underserved by Raleigh's community service programs. This highlighted a significant need for the support of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity in the Triangle area. After numerous discussions, plans were made to schedule an interest meeting for a Western Wake Alumni Chapter, and it was soon decided that the new chapter would be located in the Town of Cary.
In the late summer of 1988, approximately 20 brothers gathered at Jordan Hall in Cary to meet with Provincial Polemarch William H. Hooker. The purpose of the meeting was to gain the Provincial Polemarch's support for the Cary chapter. However, the outcome was quite the opposite. While this presented a temporary setback, it did not dampen the group's spirit. A small sub-group continued to meet, brainstorming ideas to garner support for the chapter.
During the 1988-1989 fraternal year, the 18th Middle Eastern Province Polemarch, Alfred "Al" White was appointed. Brother White was presented with the petition for the Cary chapter and biographies of the interested brothers. After reviewing the information, Brother White contacted Brother Anderson in the late summer of 1988 and arranged to meet with the interest group. After speaking with the brothers individually and understanding the group's goals, Brother White expressed his support and outlined the necessary steps and activities to establish a new chapter.
Over the next 12 months, the group established a treasury, ensured all brothers became Life Members or subscribing Life Members, fulfilled their contributions to the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity National Housing Fund, and set up official records. These efforts culminated in the installation ceremony for the new chapter. The late, 26th Grand Polemarch, Dr. Ulysses S. McBride was in attendance.
