Sickle Cell Disease Awareness- Blood Drive
Our Inaugural Sickle Cell Awareness Blood Drive, led by Brother Xavier Larkin as the Blood Program Leader, took place on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at the Taylor Family YMCA in collaboration with the American Red Cross. This drive was organized to raise awareness about sickle cell disease (SCD), a genetic blood disorder that primarily impacts African Americans and other communities of color. SCD causes chronic pain, anemia, organ damage, and life-threatening complications due to the presence of abnormally shaped red blood cells, which block blood flow and hinder oxygen delivery throughout the body. Regular blood transfusions are vital for managing the disease, and finding compatible donors—especially from those of African descent—is crucial to improving health outcomes.
Our chapter recognized the urgency of this need and worked to address it by organizing this blood drive. The event aimed to increase awareness, encourage donor participation, and provide essential resources for those battling sickle cell disease. Thanks to the efforts of our dedicated members and the support of the community, we successfully registered 26 donors, including 8 first-time donors, with 3 deferred. Exceeding our initial goal of 20 donors, we collected a total of 23 units of blood, making a significant and meaningful contribution to the fight against sickle cell disease.

Breaking the Stigma
Brother Barnabas Jay's generous donation highlights the critical need for awareness around sickle cell disease, which disproportionately affects African American communities. Greater awareness is essential for early diagnosis, improved treatment options, and increased support for individuals living with the condition. Blood donations play a vital role in managing complications associated with sickle cell disease, as they are crucial for preventing and treating episodes. Advocacy efforts, like Brother Jay’s, help bridge healthcare gaps and bring much-needed attention to the challenges faced by affected communities. His contribution is a powerful step in creating a more informed and supportive environment for those impacted.
